SIME-Stromag TODAY

A world leader in the industrial disc brake market, the
SIME-Stromag story began in 1927 with the
founding of SIME, an electromagnetic separator
manufacturer for the mining and iron and steel
industries.
Before long, the company branched out into industrial
brake technology. By 1945, drum brakes were
already on the market. Then, in the early 1960s, the
first industrial disc brake was launched in the iron
& steel industry.
Constant attention to evolving needs and an effort
to focus its product development on quality and
innovation soon led to the company’s reputation
spreading across all the continents.
Today, 60% of sales come from exports, and SIME is
particularly active on fast-growing markets like wind
turbines and port applications, as well as in the more
traditional areas such as iron and steel, nuclear
applications and public transportation. SIME has gone
on to acquire world-renowned skills, validated by
ISO 9001-2000 certification.
In 2001, the company became SIME-Stromag, an
affiliate of the German group Stromag AG specializing
in power transmission devices, confirming its
leadership on the industrial brakes market.
However, this success is above all due to the company’s
Human Capital and the values it has maintained and
brought to the fore in the course of time and which it
continues to embody every day, all over the globe.
WORLD DISTRIBUTION NETWORK
PRODUCTION
In order to ensure optimum control of the manufacturing
process and therefore optimum product quality, SIME-Stromag's
entire production operation takes place at its factory at
La Guerche near Nevers in the center of France. All of its
suppliers are required to offer the same standard of quality
and are regularly the subject of detailed audits. Its organization
enables the company to handle every type of request,
from a simple spare part to a production run that can amount
to several hundred units per month. This flexibility comes from
the use of integrated machining centers and particularly careful
production flow management.

EMERGENCY BRAKES SERVICE BRAKES
ELECTROMAGNETIC TYPE:
The range of electromagnetic service
brakes is made up of the 600, 5 and CA
series.
The torque vary from 50 to 8000 Nm with
disks having a standard diameter from 175
to 995 mm.
Due to their automatic lining wear
compensation arrangements, these brakes
are particularly suitable for iron and steel
applications.
HYDRAULIC TYPE:
The FAV and T are more powerful than
the other electromagnetic range and can
be used equally for the same applications
according to different specifications or
preferences:
- The FAV range extensively addresses the
demands of the global market, in particular
for port and mining activities.
- The T range is ideal for variety of
hoisting applications, where its modern
Hydrospring® technology and user-friendliness
are greatly appreciated.

The SIME-Stromag brake ranges are based on two different technologies: hydraulic and
electromagnetic.
For each of them, SIME-Stromag proposes 2 major brake families:
• service brakes intended for intensive use at "high-speed"
• emergency brakes for safety use at "low speed".
Both families are exclusively made up of fail to safe disc brakes acting by spring
application in the event of inadvertent or deliberate power interruption.

The 2SA and OSA/OOSA electromagnetic calipers
are the most powerful on the market. With
optimum reliability, they ensure the safe lifting of
loads, essentially in the iron and steel industry and
in nuclear power plants.
HYDRAULIC TYPE:
SH type calipers are powerful symmetrically
designed hydraulic emergency brakes.
The SHC version incorporates a hydraulic unit into
the chassis of the caliper.

STROMAG LIMIT SWITCH
These limit switches scarcely need any introduction as, due to their particular
ease of implementation, they are now widely used on all winch movements.
STROMAG MOTOR BRAKE
As a complement to SIME-Stromag disc brakes, NNF/NFA or 4 BZFM motor
brakes are widely used with low power motors. Protected efficiently from
bad weather, highly compact and reliable, the Stromag motor brakes are very
popular among users.
SIDEOS® SYSTEM
SIDEOS® by SIME-Stromag is a hoisting speed monitoring system capable
of detecting any cases of overspeed, slipping and lack of speed. SIDEOS® is
combined with the Stromag limit switch with a built-in encoder. Implementation
is simple and fast, by failure simulation and therefore without any risk
regarding the installation.

BCH calipers using hydraulic emission technology are also
suitable for use at high speeds and at low rotor speeds with
a specific lining for energetic braking.

HYDRAULIC CALIPERS FOR ROTOR BRAKING
Because of their specific design, the fail to safe
SHD type calipers can be mounted directly on speed
multipliers. This makes them easy to assemble in a
restricted space.
These calipers are designed specifically for high-energy
braking.
As an option, they can be equipped with an automatic
lining wear compensation system, with organic
or sintered linings, several shoe widths and E-type
hydraulic emission braking.
FCHR / BCHR calipers are made up exclusively of
hydraulic emission technology disc brakes, designed
specifically for the yaw braking of wind turbines.
In spite of the low disc speeds, the operating conditions
are particularly demanding on the calipers. The particular
instability of the radial and axial forces generated by
the strength of the wind calls for a suitable and proven
technology.

CONSTANT INNOVATION MAKES THE DIFFERENCE!
Nacelle yaw braking is a particularly demanding brake
system calling for extensive knowledge. More than 30 000
BCH / FCHR type calipers control the yaw of several
thousand turbines all over the world every day.
The SHD series was designed and developed
specifically to provide very high energy dynamic
braking under optimum conditions of efficiency
and safety.
It is in northern Europe, the birthplace of wind turbine technology, that SIME-Stromag
marketed the first electromagnetic disc brake installed on the rotor of a wind turbine
in the early 80s.
Twenty-five years on, SIME-Stromag is globally recognized as the specialist for wind
turbine braking.
Often located in distant, sometimes hostile geographical locations, wind turbines must be
able to generate optimum electric power without suffering from mechanical component
failure.
From Denmark to the USA, from Germany to Japan, including India, China and Spain all
the turbine users and manufacturers put their trust in SIME-Stromag brakes, fitted to their
turbines.
Our team of engineers and technicians has designed 2 ranges of disc brakes adapted to the
rotor and yaw for every machine power level of up to 5MW.

In 1966, SIME-Stromag launched the first industrial disc brake for the iron & steel
industry. Productivity and safety requirements have since developed constantly,
with the disc brake becoming a major element in achieving these objectives.
SIME-Stromag has since acquired an unrivalled reputation in this particularly demanding
environment.
Thousands of electromagnetic and hydraulic disc brakes operate on a 24/7 basis in a
dusty environment, exposed to high temperatures, on various ladle cranes and on
shop floor production lines, like hot rolling mills.
SIME-Stromag offers two equally complete electromagnetic disc brake ranges for
both service brakes and those dedicated to emergency, the robustness and easy
maintenance of which are particularly appreciated by users.
For higher braking torque, SIME-Stromag also offers hydraulic disc brake ranges with
or without a built-in hydraulic power supply and a great number of options adapted
to every condition of use.

SIME-Stromag offers two different disc service brake technologies available for every hoist, gantry or
trolley motions.
The T range with its exclusive patented system known as Hydrospring®‚ and
the thrustor type FAV range address the wider demands of the market
The SH / SHC is more particularly appreciated for the emergency braking of
boom or main hoisting motions on all types of port cranes.
Gantry motion can also be equipped either with electromagnetic calipers of
type 650 / 645 or 5D or with integrated motor brakes type NFF/ NFA / 4 BZFM;
these 2 ranges of disc brakes are both fully protected from bad weather, such
as rain, and from sea water and humidity.
